Vape Review: Voopoo Vinci Vape Kit

A fearsome rival to Smok’s popular RPM40 and Nord kits, does the Voopoo Vinci have what it takes to lead the new wave of Pod Mods?

Pod kits have proven extremely popular with vapers thanks to their portability and convenience. Recently we’ve seen the rapid rise of refillable pod kits and some true pack-leading devices like the VPod, Smok Nord and Aspire Nautilus AIO.

Enter the ‘Pod Mod’ Kit: these devices harness the convenience of a discreet, top-up-and-go refillable pod kit with the advanced features and firepower of a box mod, typified by the excellent Smok RPM40. But with the arrival of Voopoo’s Vinci kit with its 40w power range, advanced chipset and dual fire modes we might have the best iteration of a pod mod yet.

Design

With its stubby cuboid body, wide tip and three-button interface you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Voopoo Vinci is a fairly simple, unassuming device on the surface. It is, however, a piece of pocket-size precision engineering and something we found we couldn’t put down. The smooth edges are easy to hold, and it feels perfectly weighted and present in the hand. The materials all feel premium, and although we loved the sleek simplicity of our carbon black test model, there are enough Vinci designs available to please even Leonardo himself.

The Pod

The refillable pod on the Vinci is a chunky little number that’s held securely to the mod with four strong magnets. You pop the coil of your choice into the bottom of the pod with a push (‘plug and play’) then find the small rubber seal with your fingernail, open it up and fill the pod with juice, seal then attach to the mod.

Voopoo’s Vinci pod reveals a devilishly clever little feature. If a common complaint of pod devices is that they rarely offer any kind of manual airflow control, the Vinci pod can be inserted in one of two directions which allow for a slightly different quality of draw: one more airy, the other more restricted. Adapting these two options to the coil you use really helps you tailor the way the Vinci vapes to your preferred style.

The drip-tip is extremely comfortable to use and assists the pod in delivering a very rich and pleasant draw.

The Coils

Voopoo have an entire range of ‘plug-n-play’ coils that fit the Vinci as well as other Voopoo devices like the Drag Baby Trio, but the two provided in the kit are more than sufficient to start with. The 0.8ohm coil provides a quality MTL (mouth-to-lung) vape at 12-18w that doubles as a (very) restricted DTL (direct-to-lung) draw, but the 0.3ohm mesh coil is an absolute DTL wonder at 32-40w, capable of incredible flavour and stunning clouds as well as being able to handle almost any kind of juice we threw at it. (Learn about MTL and DTL vaping here.)

The Mod

Voopoo have made a lot of noise about their advanced Gene chipset and for good reason. It optimises a range of functions from internal safety measures to useful data – see the screen’s puff counter and usage graph for example, firing ramp up time for both manual and automatic draw and the ability to detect the coil and set an optimal wattage to suit. It all adds up to an extremely responsive and slick device.

The LED screen is bright and clear although you cannot customise the colour as you can with the Smok RPM40. The Fire Button and + - buttons respond with a soft yet tactile click and operate the device via a combination of sequences:

  • - 5 Clicks of the Fire Button = On & Off
  • - + and – buttons adjust wattage from 5w-40w
  • - 3 Clicks of the Fire Button = Adjusts Between Auto, Manual & Both Draw Options
  • - Press and hold Fire & + Button = Locks/Unlocks all buttons (the Vinci will still fire when draw-activated)
  • - Press and hold Fire & – Button = Resets Puff Counter
  • - Press and Hold + & – Button – View Puff Information

The internal 1500mAh battery is charged via a micro-USB slot at the bottom of the mod.

Performance

With pod kits like the Voopoo Vinci, it’s no wonder we’re seeing so many sub-ohm evangelists and newer vapers and converting to the compact pleasures of the pod mod. With the 0.3ohm coil installed we couldn’t believe the quality of the dense, warm and flavoursome vape we got off the Vinci, or the voluminous, rolling clouds we were able to produce from such a small device.

The manual fire button ramps up in less than a second, but we were very impressed by the device’s unique automatic draw feature which was smooth and responsive at even a high wattage. Choice is always a good thing, so it’s great to have both modes perform equally well.

Being TPD-compliant, the 2ml capacity pod needed the odd refill throughout the day, but the excellent battery kept pace with our usage and didn’t need recharging until well into the evening. Using the MTL 0.8ohm coil should increase that, though, as well as being a little less conspicuous if big clouds aren’t exactly your thing.

Our Verdict

With its superb build-quality, ingenious chip-set and the ability to produce immense clouds and exquisite flavour for its compact size, the Voopoo Vinci Pod Mod kit is an astonishing device that combines the best features of pod kits and box mods.
