E cigarette vape tanks have evolved a lot over the years, but their main job remains the same. Quite simply, vape tanks contain your e-liquid and your coil, and many vape tanks feature some form of adjustable airflow that lets you adjust the intensity of your vape. They feature a mouth-piece, or ‘drip tip’, that helps cool the vapour as it enters your mouth, and these are often detachable and replaceable.
Most vape tanks are attached to the e-cig kit or mod with an 810-connector, a little threaded screw that attaches the tank to the device, but its universal standard means you can often pair your favourite tank with any compatible device.
The three most common types of vape tanks are: Standard, RDAs and RTAs.
Standard, or regular tanks are the most typical, user-friendly tanks available and can accommodate compatible coils that either push to fit or screw into place.
RDAs (rebuildable dripping atomisers) are intended for more experienced vapers who enjoy building their own coils out of wire, mesh and cotton. Rather than a tank that contains e-liquid, you ‘drip’ your e-liquid directly onto the cotton threaded through your coil. The flavour and clouds produced by RDAs often exceeds that of regular tanks, but as mentioned, require a lot of manual attention and understanding of resistances and coil building.
RTAs (rebuildable tank atomisers) are similar to RDAs in the sense that you insert your own coil you’ve built yourself, but RTAs include a tank to house your e-liquid, avoiding the need to constantly soak your wick manually.
Before you attach your tank to your vape device, you need to ensure it is first fitted with a compatible coil. Coils used to go by the name of ‘Atomisers’, although you’ll most often hear them referred to as coils these days. These coils are most commonly recommended for the device by the same manufacturer, so for example, a Smok Coil for a Smok Tank. Use our handy Coil Finder to choose the right coils for your tank.
Once you’ve inserted your coil, and ensured your tank is properly sealed, it’s time to fill up with your preferred e-liquid. Most UK vape tanks adhere to EU rules, which stipulate a maximum capacity of 2ml under TPD (Tobacco Products Directive) legislation.
We recommend that once you’ve filled your tank with e-liquid, you leave it for at least ten minutes to properly saturate the wicking material (such as cotton). This helps ensure you don’t get any burnt taste from your e-liquid, or ‘spitback’ from where the cotton hasn’t been fully saturated.
Once the tank has sat, it’s time to vape. Make sure you adjust your vape kit’s wattage to suit the coil you’re using and fire away! You may want to adjust your tank’s airflow after the first few vapes to ‘dial in’ to your preferred vape intensity; something between an airy DL-style (Direct to Lung) or tighter, more restricted MTL-style (mouth-to-lung) experience.
There are two main categories that vaping styles – and by extension vape tanks – fall into.
MTL stands for ‘Mouth-to-Lung’ and refers to a style of vaping where you hold the vapour in your mouth before breathing into your lungs. This action mimics the sensation of smoking a traditional cigarette, which is why you’ll find many starter kits and low-powered beginner pod kits and tanks designed especially for this style of vaping, alongside several kinds of e-liquids including high-PG, nic salt and 50/50.
DL stands for Direct Lung, and refers to a style of vaping where you draw the vapour directly into your lungs. This style is most associated with high-powered ‘sub-ohm’ mods and their compatible tanks, as well as high-VG e-liquids which produce more vapour but where the vapour is cooler and easier to take directly into the lungs.
Which tank you choose depends on your preferred vaping style and the type of vape kit you attach your tank to.
