Heated Tobacco vs. Vaping: What is the Difference?

June 08, 2026

Both are popular alternatives to smoking, but they work in very different ways. We explain the key differences between heating tobacco and vaping liquid to help you decide which is right for you.

If you're looking for an alternative to smoking, you've likely seen both traditional vape kits and "Heat-Not-Burn" (Heated Tobacco) devices. At a glance, they seem similar: both are handheld electronic devices that produce a vapour rather than smoke.

However, the technology inside them—and the experience they provide—is fundamentally different.

One relies on real tobacco leaf, while the other uses a nicotine-containing liquid. This guide compares the two head-to-head on cost, flavour, and experience to help you make an informed choice.

Key Takeaways

  • The Core Difference: Vaping heats a liquid (e-liquid); Heated Tobacco heats real tobacco leaf.
  • The Taste: Heated Tobacco offers an authentic "earthy" tobacco taste; Vaping offers thousands of flavours from Fruit to Dessert.
  • The Cost: Vaping is generally much cheaper to run, with e-liquid costing significantly less than tobacco sticks.
  • The Verdict: Heated Tobacco is best for those who miss the specific taste of cigarettes; Vaping is best for versatility and value.

How Do They Work? (The Tech)

To understand the difference, you need to look at what is being heated.

Vaping

A vape kit heats E-Liquid (a mixture of Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin, flavourings, and nicotine). A battery powers a heating coil, which turns this liquid into an inhalable vapour. Crucially, there is no tobacco present in a vape.

Heated Tobacco (Heat-Not-Burn)

These devices heat a compressed tobacco stick (which looks like a small cigarette) to a precise temperature, typically around 350°C. This is hot enough to release nicotine and flavour in an aerosol, but not hot enough to burn the tobacco.

The Comparison: Flavour & Experience

This is usually the deciding factor for most users.

Heated Tobacco

  • The Experience: Because it uses real leaf, the taste is authentically "tobacco-like." It provides an earthy, toasted flavour that e-liquid struggles to replicate perfectly.
  • The Drawback: The flavour variety is limited mostly to tobacco and menthol blends. It also produces a distinct smell (often described as toasted tea or damp hay) which, while less intrusive than smoke, is not odourless.

Vaping

  • The Experience: Vaping offers a completely different world of flavour. While you can get great Tobacco E-Liquids, you can also choose FruitDessert, or Beverage flavours.
  • The Advantage: With modern Nic Salts, you can get a smooth, satisfying nicotine hit that feels very close to smoking, but with a much more pleasant taste and smell.

The Comparison: Cost

This is where vaping often wins out. While the initial cost of the device might be similar, the running costs are very different.

  • Heated Tobacco: The tobacco sticks are a tobacco product and are taxed accordingly. A pack of 20 sticks typically costs around £5-£6—roughly half the price of cigarettes, but still a significant daily cost.
  • Vaping: A 10ml bottle of e-liquid costs around £3.40-£4.99. Depending on your device, one bottle can last as long as 3-4 packs of cigarettes. This makes vaping significantly cheaper in the long run.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Choose Heated Tobacco If: You absolutely miss the specific, earthy taste of real tobacco and haven't found an e-liquid that satisfies that craving.
  • Choose Vaping If: You want to save money, explore a wider range of flavours, and have a device that is cheaper to maintain.

Conclusion

Both vaping and heated tobacco are considered less harmful alternatives to smoking cigarettes, as neither involves combustion (burning).

The choice ultimately comes down to what you value most. If the authentic taste of tobacco is your priority, Heated Tobacco is a solid option. However, for versatility, flavour choice, and long-term value, vaping remains the most popular choice for UK users.

Is IQOS a vape?

No. IQOS is a brand of "Heated Tobacco" product. It uses real tobacco sticks. A vape uses liquid nicotine. They are different technologies.

Is heated tobacco safer than vaping?

Both are considered significantly less harmful than smoking cigarettes because they do not produce tar or carbon monoxide from combustion. However, vaping is generally considered to have a slight edge in harm reduction as it contains no tobacco at all.

Can you use e-liquid in a heated tobacco device?

No. Heated tobacco devices are designed specifically for solid tobacco sticks. Putting liquid into them will break the device. Likewise, you cannot put tobacco sticks into a vape tank.

Does heated tobacco smell?

Yes. While it doesn't smell like cigarette smoke, heated tobacco produces a distinct "toasted" or "earthy" smell. It is not odourless, whereas vapour from an e-cigarette often smells only of the flavouring (e.g., fruit or mint) and dissipates quickly.
