Can You Take a Vape to the USA? A UK Traveller’s Guide

October 20, 2025

Flying to the United States with a vape? This short guide covers where your device belongs on the plane, how to pack eliquids, what airports and airlines allow, and what to expect when you land.

Longhaul trips come with enough moving parts. Add a vape and new questions pop up: will security let it through, where do the batteries go, can I top up before boarding? Here you’ll find clear answers and links to official rules so you can travel with confidence.

A few things work differently in America, from the higher age for purchases to local rules on where you can vape and which flavours are sold. We’ll keep the essentials simple and show you how to check your airline and destination for the latest details before you fly.

We also point out a few U.S. rules that differ from the UK, including local restrictions on flavours and indoor use. Use this as a starting point, then check your airline and destination for the latest details before you fly.

Key takeaways

  • Pack vape devices and spare lithium batteries (if carrying) in your cabin bag, not in checked luggage
  • Follow the 100 ml liquids rule for carryon eliquids; larger bottles can go in checked bags
  • No vaping or charging on planes; follow crew instructions and use signed outdoor areas at airports
  • The U.S. legal age for vape purchases is 21; expect ID checks in shops
  • State laws vary on flavours and indoor vaping; check local rules for your destination

Can you take a vape to the USA?

Yes. Electronic cigarettes are permitted for personal travel, but devices and any spare lithium batteries must go in your carryon bag, not in checked baggage. See TSA guidance on electronic cigarettes and vaping devices and FAA PackSafe advice for ecigarettes. Switch the device off and protect it from accidental activation. Do not attempt to charge a vape on the aircraft.

How to pack your device and eliquids

Carry devices and spare batteries in the cabin in carry-on or hand luggage. Use a case or sleeve to avoid misfires, and carry loose batteries in proper battery cases so the terminals are insulated. Keep pods and cartridges upright, if possible.   At high-altitudes, some liquids can expand. With vape tanks and pods, this can cause leaks. If your pod or tank is prone to leaking during flights, leave a little space in the e-liquid chamber or remove it and carry tissues.

For eliquids in hand luggage, follow the TSA liquids rule. Each bottle must be 100 ml or less and all your liquids must fit in a single, clear quartsized bag. See the TSA 311 rule. Larger bottles may be packed in checked luggage, sealed and upright inside a secondary bag.

Airports and planes: what you can and cannot do

Inside U.S. airport terminals, vaping is treated like smoking in most places. Use designated outdoor areas where provided and follow local signage. On board, vaping is prohibited and charging devices is not allowed. See TSA guidance on ecigarettes for air travel above, and your airline’s battery policy page before you fly.

Age and purchasing rules in the U.S.

The national legal age to buy any tobacco or nicotine product in the U.S. is 21. Retailers must check ID. For a federal overview, see FDA Tobacco 21 information. If you are under 21, you will not be able to purchase vape products in the U.S. Local enforcement on possession varies, but you should expect shops to refuse sales below the age of 21.

State laws: flavours and indoor vaping restrictions

Some U.S. states restrict the sale of flavoured eliquids, and many include vaping in smokefree indoor air laws. As examples, California and Massachusetts have statewide flavour bans for retail sales. A growing number of states and cities prohibit vaping in enclosed public places such as restaurants, bars and offices. Because these rules change, check official state or city pages for your destination, or consult a current summary such as state smokefree laws from ANR Foundation
